It’s been a while since I follow this Belgian/Mexican electronic/Industrial project: seen on stage, reviewed, had a meet & greet … and found it better with the years. The experience is paying off!
Rise is a great opener that mixes a modern sound with a good tempo, great vocals, stomping beats and a clubland feel! Female vocals are spitting out some lyrics to enforce the whole story within the song. One of the best songs ever from Super Dragon Punch (worth the band’s name)! I see this one score during future gigs and even score in clubland! It’s a very personal track about people who pretend to want to help you, but end up pushing you down. The whole album has been build up around the title track: Thorns (in life, love, reality, personal troubles, …).
Surface mixes (futuristic) synths with electronic drums (however lesser stumping beats), the vocals take the lead. I feel like every track so far has been created to be performed with a lot of energy on stage!
Warp is a speeded up track filled with pumping beats. I can see Jérémie Venganza jump up and down, run from left to right as completely on fire firing off the vocals and heating/pumping up the crowd!
Split is about losing someone and thinking/hoping you can reset time and start all over. It’s a nice industrial/electro song. I would have loved it more if the tempo was a bit higher.
Gloom mixes an great retro synth sound with modern sounding beats and firing up vocals. The song feels like mixing the best of the past with the best from 2024 possibilities! Somehow the vocals sound a bit different here (and I kinda like it).
Haste is what the title says: fast but also heavy and all fired up! It’s so far the strongest song on this album and has to be played on stage! Feel the energy and enjoy! Don’t put this one on whilst driving a car (or something similar).
Apart hits hard from the start (thanks to the electronic drum and fired up vocals). Once again a very strong track!
More pumping beats comes with Exit. It’s clearly a banger and ment for clubland: enjoy and let yourself go!
Scar (Feat. Lis Van Den Akker) is another banger, with this time Lis doing the backings (adding some fragility). I love the breakdown and the parts where Lis starts whispering.
Fallen is already the last track and is the softest track on this album. This synth driven track might even be called a false ballad.
Well it’s by far the best album ever from Super Dragon Punch! It’s clear time made this one grow and become better & stronger! I hope some tracks end up as great single’s! Let’s hope the PR department of the label pays off and let’s hope lots of gigs will follow! Congratulations!
