The music world is facing a lot of struggles due to the current pandemic, and the silent contemplation that artists find themselves somewhat forced into is reflected in Rock Chansons, AXXIS frontman Bernhard Weiß' outstanding first solo album. It's out on 7 May, and if you're looking for uplifting ballads, look no further. The rich variety of arrangements achieved with just a piano (okay, and a hint of strings and a xylophone) really is amazing.

The message set by the opening "Always A Light" is one of self-belief and resilience in the face of hardship, and it runs throughout the entire album. The first single, "Will the World Trust in Me" takes the message even further, painting a beautiful utopia where people live peacefully without the need of borders and governments, all because they trust in themselves and each other. It's also very much an earworm of a song, as everyone around me can certainly confirm.

"Try to Find Your Way" sends out the message that all you need in order to find your way through darkness, loneliness and hardship is yourself.
"Starlight" is my personal favourite. Its message reminds us of how small we are, and yet "The earth always rotates around itself / it seems we do the same, we feel no shame but only think about ourselves / as if we were eternal and forever" even though "our world is like a speck of dust in the endless universe."
"All For Love" is a beautiful love ballad which seems to be quite a favourite among the AXXIS fans. It's perfect for a candlelit dinner with a special someone.
"Eyes in the Night" is about the struggles we face in our mind, the crusade against our own darkness, while "Crying for You" is another love ballad, this time the story being one of a complicated and painful relationship, something most people can recognise as an experience they have been through at some point in their life. "You don't want to see what you'll always be to me," sings the protagonist, and we feel his pain as he burns "to my core" while his love doesn't see him "die in this war, the war I fought for you."
"Here I Am"  is another song about finding strength and becoming a better person through having faith in your ability to chase the demons away, and "Survive Every Day" continues the theme of fighting even if you're down, even if you're "imprisoned in this box, surrounded by wild dogs," as otherwise "my world will disappear if I don't fight for all I love."
"Last Words" closes the album with a poignant message to the protagonist's love, as he is reaching the end of his life. His last thoughts are of his beloved and he wants her to know that all his words and his life should be "a sign of my love for you."
Rock Chansons is music stripped down to the bare minimum, just a voice and a piano, and it proves that it can be all you need, when it's done as expertly as this. It really is a solid album, perfect for listening in quiet moments of contemplation or while spending time with someone special.
