[PIAS] Singles of the week #17!

English:CD-preview
  Van Muylem    29 april 2021

Single of the week is: PIROSHKA - SCRATCHING AT THE LID (RADIO EDIT)! Just because it sounds happy, has a touch of New Wave in it (listen to the hoovering guitar sound in the beginning). The vocals are cool and bit funny. It's the kind of song that brings in the sun and chases away the darkness and makes you happy for as long as you play the track! Enjoy the other ones too!

ESSA DIXSON - KEEP GOING (KRANKK REMIX)

Tessa Dixson’s techno banger Keep Going get the KRANKk treatment. Adding their trademark dark & nervous synths and basslines, slicing the track open with a sharp scalpel, revealing something new and exciting.

HIATUS KAIYOTE - RED ROOM

Twice Grammy-nominated, Melbourne-based group Hiatus Kaiyote shares a new song and video from their forthcoming album Mood Valiant. Written in an act of spontaneous composition, Red Room was born out of a bass and drum groove by band members Paul Bender and Perrin Moss when the group went to Rio De Janeiro in 2019 to work with legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai, who features on their previously-released single Get Sun. Speaking about how the new song Red Room came together Nai shares, “My vocal booth had a red light in it, and I was thinking about my old house that had all this red-colored glass in it. When the sun set in my room at a certain hour my whole room was red.”

MATTIEL - THOSE WORDS (RADIO EDIT)

A brand new single from Mattiel and it’s gorgeous. She says : “I think everyone can relate to a song like ‘Those Words’ - it’s really just about choosing who to give your energy to. If someone isn’t treating you with respect or crosses your boundaries, you don’t owe them anything. It’s an especially good reminder if you’re a person who tends to try to please everyone. Women are taught to do this from a very young age. It’s just not possible to make everyone happy, so you might as well sing and dance those cares away.“

MYKKI BLANCO - LOVE ME (FT. JAMILA WOODS & JAY CUE)
Mykki Blanco, the artist persona and stage name of Michael David Quattlebaum Jr., is an internationally renowned musician, performing artist, and LGBTQ+ activist and icon. Love Me is produced by Falty DL a features the soulful vocals of acclaimed Chicago based R&B artist Jamila Woods. The song also sees Mykki collaborate with brother Jay Cue for the first time. About the track: "Love Me is essentially about so many forms of love, patience, trust, time. Love Me I think is about the potion that is created when you sift through the ingredients that create "love", the alchemy we as human beings take part in to convey these feelings deep inside of us. This song itself like "love" in many ways sat dormant, patiently waiting for the right time, the right words, the right artists, vocalists, the right energy and divine timing to express itself and be born. That is what Love Me as a song and composition is about for me".

LOS RETROS - AMTRAK

Los Retros is the musical project of Mauri Tapia, a twenty-year-old first-generation Mexican-American based in Oxnard, CA (home also to Stones Throw affiliates Madlib and Anderson .Paak). Early bedroom recordings gathered momentum online, and before long he was amassing hundreds of thousands of streams and playing shows to sold-out crowds of young fans. Looking Back, Los Retros’ third EP with Stones Throw swings between funk and psychedelia with gentle, summery grooves. Focus track Amtrak is a romantic and feel-good indie pop tune about missing a loved one!

PIROSHKA - SCRATCHING AT THE LID (RADIO EDIT)

‘I wanted to capture a spacey, sci-fi Joe Meek keyboard riff in a driving headlong rush. Most of the songs I wrote for this album were very focused on guitars and melody, and I fancied a change - leading with the rhythm and the drums. Lyrically, well - it's the usual happy themes - mortality, death, the terrible fear of turning into your parents!’ (Moose) Scratching At The Lid is the first single taken from Piroshka’s upcoming album. This will be their second album which builds on the acclaim of their 2018 album debut Brickbat, and the reputations of former members of Lush, Moose, Elastica and Modern English. Miki Berenyi, former vocalist and guitarist of English rock band Lush, is the lead singer of Piroshka

WILL STRATTON - BLACK HOLE

With his new album The Changing Wilderness, Will Stratton reveals his new single. Of the track Stratton says: “I wrote Black Hole shortly after our last president took office. I had spent the morning of the inauguration staring at a sculpture, a neon wall by Dan Flavin in the basement of a local museum. I tried to capture the energy that I felt staring at the green light in the dark. The song is about fascists and authoritarians of all kinds, how hard they are to completely shake once they take hold in the public consciousness, and how they tend to warp the minds of everyone in their proximity, even their opposition.”
