Belgium’s rising cold wave band THE ULTIMATE DREAMERS return with their new single “Digging”, the first glimpse into their highly anticipated album “Paradoxical Sleep”, set for release in early 2025.
Digging plunges deep into a sinister sonic world where sombre, depressive vocals clash with jagged guitar riffs, amplifying the track's oppressive, doom-laden atmosphere. It’s a haunting introduction to what promises to be an intriguing new chapter for the band. So far the promo talk. I still hear the French accent (work on it please, it's not as bad as Soko but still). But on the other end: nobody commented Jane Birkin's accent. Els Pynoo is playing a role whilst singing in French, so that's not counting. No Sexism towards a man as it sounds like as if a women can do it, but no man can, lol. On the other hand we have the French band that shows how it should sound: JE T'AIME. Soit: the guitar clearly makes the song sound heavier, whilst the bass gets it's moments. The musicians are great, the track is ok, the vocals are ok but I won't add it to my playlist (yet I have all the albums from JE T'AIME on it). I miss something, that something that makes me love this song.
Adding to the eerie allure, the release is accompanied by a striking video for “Digging” directed by none other than the multi-talented Amanita Noir, renowned for her dark and avant-garde artistry. This visual experience perfectly complements the track’s unsettling vibe – a must-see for fans of the band’s signature sound.
As a bonus, the single also includes an exclusive reimagined “2024” version of their darkwave anthem “Japanese Death,” reminding us of the band’s more melodic yet melancholic side. The least we can say is that this version is the best so far. It's clear that the studio work paid off! The 80's touch has been lifted an worked out with a modern approach.
Well one thing is sure: the band is still growing and the studio work paid off. The vocals are getting better with the day, just work on a minor thing (take it or leave it). Looking forward to hear the new album! Well done Len Lemeire!
