Het is al 7 jaar geleden dat Metallica Death Magnetic uitbracht. Maar James Hetfield heeft bevestigd dat ze bezig zijn een nieuw album op te nemen. In een interview over gitaren zei Hetfield het volgende: "I tell ya, we’re recording right now, and there’s the number one guitar, there’s the number two guitar, there’s the number three. And the third-track guitars that just sound different. They all sound different".

In een interview met radio station Komp 92.3 zei Kirk Hammett dat het moeilijk is om alle bandleden op het zelfde moment in een zelfde kamer te krijgen.
"A lot of it has to do with the fact that life takes over for us. We all have families, and we all have the band, and we all have other things in our lives, and it's just difficult scheduling all four of us in a room."
